If you’ve been in a relationship for a while, it’s not uncommon to wonder whether or not the relationship is solid – whether or not this is the right relationship to be in. When you’re thinking about being with someone for the rest of your life, you need to know whether the relationship you’re in is the best you’re going to find, or if you’re missing out on something. Here are some questions to ask yourself to see if you’re in a solid relationship.

1. Do you trust each other?
Trust is probably the most important thing in a relationship. If you can’t trust your own partner, who can you trust? When your partner is out with their friends, are you constantly worried that they’re going to cheat on you? Do you have reason to think they would? (i.e. they have done it in the past)? Knowing that you can trust your partner no matter where they are – is essential in a good relationship.

2. Do you WANT to do things for each other?
When your partner asks you to drive them somewhere, ask you to help their mom move into a home, or go to an arts and crafts show or auto show – do you want to do it? If you’re in a truly loving relationship, you will enjoy doing things for each other because knowing they are happy makes you happy.

3. Do you both make sacrifices?
If one person is always have to make sacrifices, such as moving across the country, or quitting their job so the other person can go further in their career – you have to be careful. Sacrifices often have to be made in a relationship, but it shouldn’t be one-sided. You both need to work for the relationship if you want it.

4. Do you talk highly about each other?
When you’re with your friends, do you spend more time talking about your partner in a positive or negative manner? If all you can do is put them down or complain about the relationship to your friends, you’ve got a problem. On the other hand, if all you do is talk them up – and you sincerely mean every word – your relationship is looking pretty good.

5. Do you look forward to spending time together?
When two people are busy with work and/or school, it can be hard to spend a lot of time together. But do you make time for each other as often as possible? And do you look forward to it every time? Being away from your partner gives you the opportunity to miss them. If you miss them when you’re away, then you’re on the right track.

6. Do you work as a team?
Relationships are like team sports and as they say – there is no “I” in TEAM. When you’re in a long-term relationship you need to look at the future as a team and meet goals as a team. Do you have common goals and do you work towards them together?
